Professor W. Jon. P. Barnes visited NISE-Lab
Prof. Jon Barnes, an honorary research
fellow of Glasgow University, visited NISE-Lab from 8 to 16 May at the
invitation of Prof. Longjian Xue.
Prof. Barnes, an expert on the tree frog
biology, has focused on the study of adhesion mechanisms in tree frogs for the
last ~20 years, and published related results in Science, Journal of
Experimental Biology, Journal of the Royal Society
Interface, MRS Bulletin, et al.
On 10 May, Prof.
Barnes gave a lecture titled “Wet but not slippery: adhesive mechanisms in tree
frogs –biology and biomimetic implications”, systemically introduced his
research on the adhesion mechanisms in tree frogs. His research revealed that
capillarity is the major force component in wet adhesion and the toe pad hierarchical
micro- and nanostructure ensure the high adhesion and friction force in wet
condition. Professors and students from School of Physics and Technology, College
of Chemistry and Molecular Sciences, Collegeof Life Sciences, School of Civil
Engineering, et al. also attended the
lecture. There was full and thorough discussion after the lecture.

discussion
In
the next days, Prof. Barnes and the NISE-Lab members exchanged ideas on the
tree frog adhesion and discussed the biomimetic solutions to sticky problems. Based
on the full discussion, Professors decided to establish long-term collaboration
and to apply for the International Exchanges project from the Royal Society
this year, and efficiently finished the first draft of propsosal。
